😀  Bio: Kelly Caine is an internationally recognized leader in human factors whose career has been defined by pioneering research and deep commitment to advancing the design of technology around human needs. She is a Professor in the Human-Centered Computing Division of the School of Computing at Clemson University and founder of the Humans and Technology Lab (www.hatlab.org), where she leads multidisciplinary research in human-centered computing, research methods, privacy, usable cybersecurity, and AI.

Dr. Caine has made enduring contributions to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society through her scholarship, leadership, and service. She has been a member for over twenty years and has served in leadership roles within the HFES Aging Technical Group, including Program Chair and General Chair helping shape the group’s scholarly direction and fostering collaboration among researchers and practitioners.

Her groundbreaking research has been recognized with honors and awards from the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Science Foundation. In 2024–2025, she served as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Iceland, further extending her global impact.

A prolific scholar, Dr. Caine is co-author of Understanding Your Users: A Practical Guide to User Research (2015) and has published nearly one hundred peer-reviewed papers in leading venues. Her work is widely respected for bridging rigorous scientific inquiry with practical, real-world impact.

Prior to joining Clemson University, Dr. Caine held positions at Indiana University and Google. She earned her B.A. from the University of South Carolina and her M.S. and Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Awarded NSF grant to develop computational jewelry for mHealth

dartmouth-clemson2Dr. Kelly Caine (Co-PI) and Dr. Jacob Sorber (PI) of Clemson University along with Dr. Ryan Halter (Co-PI), Dr. David Kotz (PI), Dr.Andrés Molina-Markham (Co-PI), and Dr. Sarah Lord of Dartmouth College have been awarded a new grant from the National Science Foundation’s Computer Systems Research program to study the potential for computational jewelry to support mobile-health applications.

Dr. Caine’s role in the project will be to lead the human factors effort, with a focus on security, privacy and usability. More information about the project can be found at amulet-project.org.

Invited to attend National Academies Human-Systems Integration Event

Dr. Caine was invited to attend the National Research Council (NRC)’s Committee on Human-Systems Integration event, Human-Systems Integration at the National Academies: A Celebration of 30 Years (1980-2010) at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

The event included talks by Donald Norman, as well as all of the past chairs of COHSI.

Featured in APA gradPSYCH Magazine on “Cross-Disciplinary” Fields

Dr. Caine was featured in the cover story from this month’s American Psychological Association’s gradPSYCH Magazine. The article titled, “Mixing it up: What are the pros and cons of aligning yourself with a hybrid field? discusses “hybrid” or “cross-disciplinary” fields at the forefront of cutting-edge science.

Elected Chair of HFES Technical Group on Aging

Dr. Caine has been elected “Program Chair” for the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Technical Group on Aging.

In this post, she will be responsible for overseeing the technical review of proposals submitted for the HFES Annual Meeting including recruiting and assigning reviewers and making final acceptance decisions.

HFES 2010

This week Dr. Caine was in San Francisco for the 54th annual meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting.

While at the conference, Dr. Caine chaired a session, served in the role as Secretary/Treasurer for the Aging Technical Group, and presented a paper titled, “Errors of Disclosure in Computer Mediated Systems”.

Invited to speak at Purdue

Kelly has been invited to give a talk on “Human Factors Approaches to Preserving Privacy”. The presentation to the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN will be on December 9th, 2009.

HFES 2009

This week Kelly was in San Antonio, TX for the 53rd annual meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

During the conference Kelly served as session chair, attended talks on human factors research, and met with colleagues.

Presentation at CACR

Kelly will be the featured speaker at this week’s Center for Applied Cybersecurity seminar. The seminar will be located in the Mauer School of Law in Bloomington, IN and will be simulcast at IUPUI in Indianapolis.

Kelly’s talk will be on “Everyday PrivacyBehaviors: Implications for Design”.
